At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Finland, Sauli Niinisto, TRH the Grand Duke and the Grand Duchess will visit the Republic of Finland for a state visit, from 10 to 12 May 2016. They will be accompanied by Vice Prime Minister, Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Jean Asselborn, and Minister for the Environment Carole Dieschbourg.
This visit's programme is very varied, with different events of a political, economic, cultural and environmental nature. The grand ducal couple will among others lay a wreath of flowers at the Hietaniemi cemetary, and will visit the Helsinki City Hall, the parliament, Aalto university, the 'VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland', as well as the 'Haltia – the Finnish Nature Centre'. Their Royal Highnesses will also assist at a presentation of Me & MyCity concept.
A large economic delegation will accompany the grand ducal couple in the context of a multisectorial economic mission on the theme of innovation, which takes place from 9 until 12 May. This will deepen the relations between Luxembourg and Finland and foster the search of new business opportunities between the two countries.
The last state visit to the Republic of Finland took place in 1993, and the last state visit of a Finnish president in Luxembourg was in 2008.
State visits, the most solemn events in bilateral and diplomatic relations between two countries, take only place at the level of heads of state.
