This year the Fête de la Musique in the Grand Duchy will be taking place from 17 to 21 June. For this international event, concerts have been organised everywhere in the country. From big music events to small concerts; from classical music to performances of contemporary music, music plays the centre stage in all its varieties. Follow all of the events on Twitter: #fdlm2016!
Apart from Luxembourg City, which offers a rich and diverse musical programme, 24 municipalities join forces at this year's Fête de la Musique: Bertrange, Bridel/Kopstal, Clervaux, Dahlheim, Differdange, Dudelange, Echternach, Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck, Grevenmacher, Hesperange, Kayl, Larochette, Lorentzweiler, Mamer, Mertert, Niederanven, Putscheid, Reckange-sur-Mess, Sanem, Schengen, Stadtbrediums, Steinsel, and Wiltz.
Free concerts all over the Grand Duchy
The particular attraction of the Fête de la Musique in the Grand Duchy is that there are events all over the place, and that it's easy to get from one event to another. That makes it easy to decide whether to go to a small-scale event in a village or to a major show in one of the towns in the Grand Duchy.
Some of the highlights of this year's Fête de la Musique will be:
Saturday, 18 June 2016: the town of Dudelange, which was the first place in the Grand Duchy to hold a Fête de la Musique, in 1993, traditionally offers one of the highlights of the event. Once again this year the town will be offering an extremely varied pop/rock programme featuring international and local bands performing on stages erected throughout the town.
18 and 19 June 2016: the town of Echternach will be offering a varied programme of jazz and electronic music as well as concerts by the town's music school and the Echternach 'Harmonie municipale' band.
In Luxembourg City, the Fête de la Musique coincides with the 'Opening Act' of the Summer in the City programme, on 21 June 2016. Save the date - the city will be besieged by music! In no fewer than eleven venues in the city centre, stages will be erected to present to you an amazing variety of performers, bands and orchestras in a spectacular setting with a party atmosphere. Above all, don't miss the concert by the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra (OPL), conducted by Gast Waltzing, with soloist Angélique Kidjo. This musical couple managed to win one of the prestigious Grammy Awards in 2016, for their album 'Angelique Kidjo Sings with the Orchestre philharmonique du Luxembourg'.
The 'Fête de la Musique' was created in France in 1981. The Grand Duchy has been taking part since 2000, and it's a very successful event: in 2014, the Fête de la Musique attracted some 40,000 spectators.
