Yonas KINDÉ for 'Team Refugees'

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, a complete team made up of refugees will be taking part. The team was created at the initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Its aim is to send a message of hope to all refugees in the world and attract the attention of everyone to the scale of the refugee crisis. The IOC and UNHCR have chosen to give these athletes, who can not be part of the official delegations of their host countries, the opportunity to compete in the Olympics.

The #TeamRefugees team consists of ten athletes from South Sudan, Syria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, all refugees either in Belgium, Luxembourg, Kenya, Brazil and Germany. Among them is 36 year old marathon runner Yonas Kindé, an Ethiopian having lived in Luxembourg since 2012, and having been given the official international protection statute in 2013. He is currently training with Yves Göldi at the National School of Physical Education and Sport (ENEPS) of Luxembourg and has won marathons in Europe (particularly in Frankfurt in 2015).

At the opening ceremony of the Olympics, the 'Team Refugees' will enter under the Olympic flag, just after the host country Brazil. They also have their own welcoming ceremony at the Olympic Village.

The COSL has a special website for the Rio Olympics, through which it will communicate about all the activities of the Luxembourg athletes.

For the Paralympic Games, to be held in Rio from 7 to 18 September 2016, two Luxembourg athletes were nominated: weight thrower Tom Habscheid – having officially passed the selection criteria A at the IPC Athletics Grand Prix IPC (International Paralympic Committee) in Dubai in March 2016 – and category MH4 handcyclist Joël Wagener.

Way to go for both of them, as they have been preparing the Paralympics since 2011.
