The latest edition of the country's main statistical indicators has just been published.

The 2016 version of the annual booklet published by Statec (the Grand Duchy's national institute of statistics and economic studies) has just been published. It is in a practical pocket-sized format, easy to carry about, in three languages: French, English, and German.

A very favourable macroeconomic climate

The Grand Duchy has no reason to be shy of its excellent ranking in 20th place in the 2016-2017 edition of the Global Competitiveness Index recently published by the World Economic Forum. Among the 138 countries tested, the Grand Duchy continues to rate as one of the most competitive economies in the world.

The Luxembourg Stock Exchange goes green, with the Luxembourg Green Exchange

The Grand Duchy is keen to become the world's centre for green finance

The Luxembourg Green Exchange (LGX) has just taken its first steps! This platform, dedicated to green financial instruments, makes the Luxembourg Stock Exchange the world's first stock exchange to restrict itself to environment-friendly financial products. Access is restricted to issuers meeting strict criteria for admissibility. The platform is aiming at establishing a new benchmark for the strongly developing market for green securities.

Luxembourg ranks a global 12th in the Global Financial Centres Index

In all, 87 financial centres were evaluated for the 20th edition.

In the 20th edition of the half-yearly Global Financial Centres Index, the consultancy agency Z/Yen evaluated 87 financial centres from all over the world according to their competitiveness. In this ranking, Luxembourg comes in 12th position globally and in 3rd position of the European financial centres. In all, the index confirms the dynamism and the international outlook of the financial centre.

University of Luxembourg among the world's best 180 universities

The University has improved its ranking in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings

In its latest publication, the famous international ranking of higher education establishments - the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2017 - has placed the University of Luxembourg in 178th place among the 978 universities ranked worldwide. Compared with last year (193th place in 2015), the University has improved its result in every category.

1st Luxembourgish Translation and Interpreting Day

The first Luxembourgish Translation and Interpreting Day will take place on Friday, 30 September at the National Literature Centre (Centre National de la Littérature, CNL) in Mersch.

To mark its fifth anniversary, the Luxembourg association of translators and interpreters (Association luxembourgeoise des traducteurs et interprètes, ALTI) is organising the first day in honour of translators and interpreters in the Grand Duchy, on 30 September at the CNL.

Privately-owned works of art will be on show during Private Art Kirchberg

Businesses and institutions will be opening their doors to reveal their hidden treasures.

On Sunday, 25 September 2016, eleven businesses and institutions located on the Kirchberg plateau on the outskirts of Luxembourg City will be opening their doors to art-lovers during the Private Art Kirchberg event. On display will be a number of collections that are normally only seen by employees and clients; they include a number of works by internationally renowned artists. At the same time you will be able to explore the interior of some of the Kirchberg's architectural gems.

Oktoberfest in Alzingen

From 22 until 25 September, experience the celebrations as if you were in Munich

Dirndl, beer and pretzel — every year, the Oktoberfest attracts thousands of revelers who enjoy the unique atmosphere. National and international music groups play for the pleasure of the visitors, there is a traditions procession and you'll be able to see men and women dressed up in Lederhosen and Dirndl. No, we are not talking about the mega-event which takes place every year in Munich, but about its somewhat smaller Luxembourgish cousin which takes place from 22 to 25 September 2016 in Alzingen, south of Luxembourg City.

2016 Heritage Days (Journées du Patrimoine)

From 23 September to 9 October 2016, explore the history behind the Grand Duchy's heritage.

Evidence of the Grand Duchy's past is all around us. It takes the form of monuments, houses, archives and remains. A rich heritage, and using new technologies it can sometimes be accessible virtually. Even so, to really get the feel of a place and all its history, a real visit is still the best solution. And that's why the 2016 Heritage Days have adopted the theme of accessibility for all. People with reduced mobility are now able to access more castles and churches, including for example the castle in Clervaux and the water tower in Dudelange.

2016 British & Irish Film Season

From 21 September to 1 October 2016, immerse yourself in the world of British and Irish cinema, at the British & Irish Film Season (BIFS).

For this 7th edition, the films will be shown in the evening, either at the Ciné-Utopia (Avenue de la Faïencerie in Luxembourg City) or at the national cinematheque (Place du Théâtre). The programme comprises 15 films from England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man, ranging from drama to documentary, including adventure, comedy and thriller genres.

The Grand Duchy keeps its triple-A

'The AAA rating is a cornerstone in the country's attractiveness and thus also a token for growth and the creation of new jobs,' said the Minister for Finance (September 2016).

On 16 September 2016 the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) again confirmed that the Grand Duchy had obtained an "AAA" rating from the three main agencies: S&P, Moody’s and Fitch. The Grand Duchy is one of the countries at the top of the list for the rating for sovereign debts of member States of the euro area, alongside Germany, Finland, Austria and the Netherlands.

From 16 to 22 September 2016, Europe will be celebrating sustainable urban mobility. There is still time for businesses and municipalities to register.

The Grand Duchy has been taking part in this event for more than ten years. The Verkéiersverbond (Transport Community) is encouraging municipalities to organise awareness-raising events on the event's theme. This year's slogan is "Smart mobility. Strong economy".

Rio Paralympics start on 7th September and finish on 18th September 2016. Three athletes represent the colors of our country in the para-cycling and athletics. Let's introduce you them.

Luciano Fratini was born on 31 October 1963. He holds a qualification from the Michel Lucius technical secondary school in Luxembourg City; he is married, and has two children. He is currently manager of the accessible housing company AH sàrl, based in Luxembourg City. What makes him different is that he has been paraplegic since May 1985.

Joël Wagener was born in Luxembourg on 17 August 1972. He is married and has two children; he currently lives in Lenningen. He has been physically handicapped since October 1994, after suffering an accident at work (he worked for the national railway company). He is the second handicapped athlete to be selected for the Paralympics in Rio.

'Noces' and 'Souvenir' are to be screened at the 41st Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), taking place from 8 to 18 September 2016.

The season of international film festivals is now well under way. The Grand Duchy is well and truly present, with two productions included in this year's Toronto festival. The TIFF is considered one of the world's most important festivals. More than 300 films are screened, in a number of categories.

Tom Habscheid, born on 11 August 1986, is a native of Useldange and currently works at the CNA in the town of Dudelange – where he is also a member of the local athletics club. Its particularity is to have a congenital femoral deficiency. He proudly represents the colours of our country at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.
