Every year, the Safer Internet Campaign seeks to raise the internet users' awareness to problems linked to digital communication. Under the motto 'Be the change: Unite for a better internet', the 2017 edition of the Safer Internet Day takes place on Tuesday, 7 February in Luxembourg as well as in over 100 other countries. The event's goal is to promote positive content on the web, especially for adolescents. The organisers pursue a number of objectives, without however questioning the internet's positive and democratic effects, i.e.:
- raise the public's awareness to safe and secure internet usage;
- provide concrete information and practical advice to everyone;
- encourage the participation of institutions, organisations, associations, companies, individuals and initiatives at different levels, as part of this campaign.
Thus, everyone who cares about internet security is invited to join the event, individually or as part of a group.
The organisation of the Safer Internet Day in Luxembourg
The Safer Internet Day in Luxembourg is organised by the government initiative Bee Secure. Multiple activities which all conform to the motto of the 2017 edition, take place over the course of the day: press conference, radio show, etc. Two information sessions for parents have also been planned on the day itself: at 7 p.m. in Greiveldange and at 7.30 p.m. in Redange/Attert.
A vocational training course bearing the title 'Hate speech vs. freedom of expression' is also planned. The Luxembourg Public Prosecutor's Office will present the legal framework and existing case-laws, and the participants will have to elaborate actions in order to prevent verbal abuse. Moreover, the #DigiRallye is taking place on 22 February at the Forum Geesseknäppchen. At this event, some hundred children from daycare centres use creative learning methods to discover new communication technologies.
Launched in 2004, the Safer Internet Day is an initiative of the European Commission which aims to support and connect citizens around the world in their commitment to safer use of new media.
