16 gold medals for Luxembourg crémant wines

80 samples from Moselle winegrowers took part in the 26th national congress of crémant wines from France and the Grand Duchy

The excellent quality of Luxembourg crémant wines was confirmed at the 26th national congress of crémant wines from France and the Grand Duchy, held in Savoie (France). In all the Grand Duchy won 26 medals - 16 of them gold - from the 720 samples tasted by a panel of judges.

Eurostat forecasts a population of more than 1 million for the Grand Duchy in 2080

The figures have been revised downwards, but they are still impressive

According to Eurostat, the statistics office of the European Communities, the population of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will probably reach 1,066,377 in 2080. Compared with previous projections, the update forecasts a lower migration balance, with a corresponding effect on the population figures: 1,287,296 inhabitants in the 2013 projection, compared with 1,066,377 in 2017. The threshold of one million inhabitants will probably be exceeded between 2061 and 2062.

The Smart Nation comes to Luxembourg at 1,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second.

Luxembourg will develop by 2018 a HPC (High Performance Computer) with the power of one petaflop/second, which corresponds to 1,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second. In this context, on 23 March 2017, the Minister of the Economy Étienne Schneider signed the declaration of European cooperation in the context of 'High Performance Computing' (HPC).

The 21st edition of the Global Financial Centres Index has just been published. The Grand Duchy ranks 18th worldwide, and 1st in the euro area.

The London consultants Z/Yen have just published their latest report on the competitiveness of the world's financial centres. The global ranking lists 88 centres; the Grand Duchy has held its position as leader in the euro area for the past four years.

From 14 to 25 March 2017 a delegation of 24 athletes from Luxembourg participated in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.

For the 7th time already, Luxembourg participated in the Special Olympics World Winter Games, a sports event for all athletes with intellectual disabilities. During the ten days of competition, from 14 to 24 March 2017, the Grand Duchy's delegation won a total of 16 medals, including 4 gold medals.

On 20 March 2017, Secretary of State of the Economy Francine Closener launched the new official classification for the Grand Duchy's hotels.

This European system, drawn up by Hotelstars Union, uses a standard classification for hotels based on directives and criteria common to the participating countries.

The most recent edition of the fiction radio programs awards of the Luxembourg station "100,7" has just been launched.

It's been 3 years that this award rewards the most original fiction program to be aired on radio. It's a one of a kind award for Luxembourg and the Greater Region. This year it is themed around great expectations: a broad topic which can be approached in various ways and literary genres, like science-fiction, polar, documentary or even satire.

The fifth edition of the World Happiness Report ranks the Grand Duchy among the twenty happiest countries in the world.

The World Happiness Report (WHR) has been published annually since 2012, at the request of the United Nations. It ranks all the countries in the world according to their overall level of happiness. This years there are 155 countries in the ranking, and the Grand Duchy is well placed.

Spring fair rises from its ashes

From 22 to 26 March, a breath of fresh air will be blowing through the halls at Luxexpo, which have been renamed "Luxexpo The Box". In addition to a change in identity for the site, the traditional spring fair has also had a thorough makeover. As it was felt to be out-of-date and lacking in momentum - the concept has been totally reworked. The new fair, renamed SPRINGBREAK LUXEMBOURG, will now last five days, rather than nine days as in the past. And it's being held earlier in the season.

A pesticide free week for a healthier environment

From 20th to 30th March 2017, Luxembourg is participating for the 8th time already in the international pesticide action week.

Since the year 2008, the Ouni Pestiziden (without pesticides) campaign informs the public of the harmful impact that pesticides have on our environment and promotes the use of harmless alternatives. This years slogan: "It's your choice! Less poison, more biodiversity – a life without pesticides!», the campaign invites municipalities, citizens and companies to take part in the pesticide action week from 20th to 30th March 2017.

S&P confirms Grand Duchy's 'AAA' rating

On 17 March 2017, the rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) confirmed the 'AAA' rating of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, with a stable outlook.

In its analysis, S&P emphasised the flourishing character of Luxembourg's economy, the efficiency of its institutions and public governance, as well as the prudent budget policy pursued by the Government. The agency is anticipating average GDP growth of 3.4% for the period 2017-2020. In particular, it expects a strengthening of household consumption following the implementation of the 2017 tax reform.

According to a STATEC study, women spend two hours more per day than their spouses with their children.

In 2014, according to a study by the national institute for statistics (STATEC), women spent an average of 5 hours and 29 minutes per day with their children, two hours more than their spouses, who only spent 3 hours and 29 minutes with them. More than 50% of men actually spend less than three hours a day with their children, compared with 31% of women.

According to the PwC Women In Work Index, the Grand Duchy will be one of the first countries to fully bridge the gender-based pay gap, possibly in 2022.

In 2000, women in the Grand Duchy earned 15% less than their male counterparts. 15 years later, the gap had been narrowed to 4.9%. Out of all the countries analysed, the Grand Duchy ranks first, with the narrowest gender-related pay gap.
