Even though Luxembourg (co-)productions were selected 25 times and won 6 awards since the country began participating in the event, the Grand Duchy is not represented in the festival's official competition this year. It still has a presence – for the 15th year running – in the international village for the famous Marché du Film (film market) that takes place at the same time as the festival.
The Marché du Film (film market) at Cannes
Each year for the Cannes Film Festival, the city becomes a major business centre for the international film industry. Meetings with professionals from the sector, major actors, discussions and negotiations are all on the agenda. Over 12,000 professionals are expected, including producers, salespeople, buyers and festival programmers.
Luxembourg has a pavilion at Cannes run by the Film Fund, from 17 to 26 May 2017. It hosts 21 companies linked to Luxembourg cinema under this umbrella, including production, sound and new technology agencies.
A special Luxembourg day took place on 18 May with a visit to the Luxembourg pavilion, speeches, meetings with the country's professionals, a visit to the film market and to finish off, a reception honoured with the presence of their royal highnesses the hereditary Grand Duke and hereditary Grand Duchess along with the Prime Minister and the director of the Film Fund.
