The European Innovation Scoreboard is published each year in order to compare the level of innovation of the different countries in the European Union. In 2017, the Grand Duchy is considered a 'strong innovator', and ranks 8th, above the European average.
Grand Duchy increasingly innovative
Over time, the country's performance in terms of overall innovation has increased by 1.4% compared with 2010. The country's strong points lie more particularly in the attractive system for research - qualified in the EIS report as a European leader - and in the extremely favourable environment for innovation.
Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Research Marc Hansen commented on this point: "This is the outcome of long-term work and the result of highly committed government policy".
As for the EU overall, its performance in terms of innovation has continued to improve, and has now caught up with the United States and Canada.
The European Innovation Scoreboard in greater detail
The EIS, previously called the Innovation Union Scoreboard, is an annual publication by the European Commission that provides a detailed comparative analysis of performance in the field of innovation in the different countries of the EU. The University of Maastricht (Merit), under the auspices of the European Commission's Directorate-General for the Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, is responsible for producing the report. Every other year, a Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS) is also produced.
