The network organises and facilitates the exchange of information in the field of scientific research

On 7 September 2017, Luxembourg joined 20 other European countries in the ELIXIR (European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information) network, a network in which life science research data are shared and made available on the Internet in the long term.

The 'Fiederwäissen' is finally available!

Around ten days after the start of the grape harvest, the 'Fiederwäissen' offers a first taste of the new vintage.

From 22 September, the new Fiederwäissen (unfermented wine) will be available in the shops. The first bottles of this traditional speciality are generally sold around ten days after the start of the grape harvest in the vineyards of the Moselle. This typical Luxembourg delicacy is a fruity and slightly acidic wine which, thanks to its short fermentation period, has a unique flavour that offers a first taste of the next vintage.

And Luxembourgish, spoken by 323,557 people in the Grand Duchy (2011 general population census), is part of those languages. Luxembourg makes people feel safe

In the ranking of least stressful cities, Luxembourg and Germany come out on top.

If you're looking for a better quality of life, less pollution, more space, silence, tranquillity and a sense of security, you're best off heading to Western Europe. Those are the findings of a study by the company Zipjet, which has recently "examined the overall mental health" of 150 cities around the world on the basis of the main factors associated with stress, including urban aspects, pollution, finance and personal well-being.

Standard & Poor's confirms Luxembourg's "AAA" rating with stable outlook

On 15 September 2017, the rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) once again confirmed Luxembourg's "AAA" credit rating and assigned the country a stable outlook.

The S&P rating reflects the favourable momentum of the Luxembourg economy, with growth estimated at 3.4% for the period from 2017 to 2020. This positive trend can be explained by a recovery in consumption as a result of the implementation of the tax reform in 2017, as well as sustained growth in financial services.

Ever more courses for learning Luxembourgish

The National Institute of Languages​​ (Institut national des langues, INL) has just brought out the A2 volume in the series of textbooks entitled 'Schwätzt Dir Lëtzebuergesch?'

Luxembourgish classes are very popular at the moment. For the 2016/2017 academic year, 3,814 people were enrolled at the INL for classes in the Luxembourgish language. Whereas in 2009 there were 'only' 1,900, 2,600 in 2012, and 3,500 in 2016. The INL is offering 114 courses in Luxembourgish this year, compared with 88 last year.

The Grand-Duchy hosts the 2017 European Table Tennis Championships team events between September 13th and 17th.

Between 13 and 17 September, the finest European table tennis players will meet at the National Sports and Cultural Centre 'D'Coque'' in Kirchberg for the LIEBHERR 2017 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships. 42 male teams, totaling 172 athletes, and 38 female teams totaling 148 athletes participate in the European Table Tennis Championships team events.

Harvesting has begun exceptionally early this year.

On 11 September, the grape harvest officially began in Luxembourg – an exceptionally early date, because it normally starts towards the end of the month. However, the vines have suffered due to drastic weather changes this year. As a result, the remaining grapes have ripened much faster than usual meaning that the quantity is slightly lower than usual but the quality is second to none.

The grape and wine festival mobilises crowds in Grevenmacher

A parade, music, wine and the queen Jena

This weekend the city of Grevenmacher is in the centre of one of the biggest festivals along the Moselle. According to the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2018, the University ranks 179th out of the 1,102 universities listed.

In the 2018 edition of the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Ranking, the University of Luxembourg ranks 179th worldwide. The University has featured among the world’s top 200 universities ever since it joined the league table in 2016, coming 178th last year and 193rd the year before.

A new absolute record for mutual funds

Net assets progress to 3.9 trillion euros, according to CSSF

The Luxembourg sector of mutual funds is definitely on the move. Thus, the Financial Sector Supervisory Commission (Commission de surveillance du secteur financier, CSSF) notes that as of 31 July 2017, the net assets of mutual funds were at 3,957 billion euros, an increase of 9.84% in one year and an absolute record. These assets are managed by 4,133 mutual funds, versus 4,170 in July 2016, which represents a slight decrease.
