Table tennis in the spotlight of Luxembourg

The Grand-Duchy hosts the 2017 European Table Tennis Championships team events between September 13th and 17th.

13-TT-MladenovicBetween 13 and 17 September, the finest European table tennis players will meet at the National Sports and Cultural Centre 'D'Coque'' in Kirchberg for the LIEBHERR 2017 ITTF European Table Tennis Championships. 42 male teams, totaling 172 athletes, and 38 female teams totaling 148 athletes participate in the European Table Tennis Championships team events. The Luxembourg delegation of the Luxembourg Table Tennis Federation (Fédération luxembourgeoise du tennis de table, FLTT), led by Xia Lian NI, Sarah de Nutte, Eric Glod and Luka Mladenovic, can compete with the best players of Europe.

Tough competition

The programme of the tournament is divided in three different divisions: the Championship Division, the Challenge Division and the Standard Division. The FLTT team will compete in the Championship Division, in which positions 1 to 16 are fought over.

In Group C, the Luxembourg male team will have to face strong opponents: Greece, Russia and Sweden. The female team will play Romania, Czech Republic and the Netherlands in Group B.

In the Group stage, three best-of-five matches will be played to determine who moves on to the next round. First and second placed teams of each group will then move on to the quarter finals. This is where the knock-out stage begins. The winner will be the one who wins the remainder of his matches.

The official opening ceremony of the Championships is held on 13 September 6.30 p.m., although the first matches are already being played as of 10 a.m. Quarterfinals are being played on Friday, the semis on Saturday and the Championship game will be disputed on Sunday as well as the finals of the other divisions.
