Every year, in the months of October and November, the Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL) is offering to check your car's lights and tyres, free of charge, at garages, roadworthiness test points and at its own premises, from 16 October to 17 November 2016.
Winter tyres mandatory
Throughout the duration of the campaign, you can get your car checked on the following points:
- The functioning and correct adjustment of your lights;
- The tyre tread, wear and age.
If everything is in order, the driver is given a test certificate that is valid if the police wants to check the car. Don't forget that, even during the preventive stages, the Grand Ducal Police has authority to issue a ticket to any driver whose tyres do not meet the legislation in force in the Grand Duchy. For car lights, the police will only issue warnings to drivers whose vehicles do not meet the requirements of the Highway Code, giving them three days to remedy the situation.
A good tyre tread for more security
Be sure to check if your car is ready for winter, thus if your lights are well-functional and if your tyres are adapted to winter conditions.
Even though the law only imposes a minimum tyre tread of 1.6 millimeters, the ACL recommends you a tyre profile depth of at least 4 millimeters to guarantee optimal grip.
Since 1 October 2012, driving an automotive vehicle on the road in winter conditions is only allowed throughout the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg if all the vehicle's wheels are fitted with winter tyres.
