From late November to January 2018, the "Winterlights" season will bring a wonderfully festive atmosphere to the capital. Of the many activities and events on offer for all the family, the Christmas markets remain a firm favourite.

16-winterlightsOver a hundred wooden chalets spread across the city's Christmas markets will be selling handicrafts, clothes, toys, accessories and plenty of delicious culinary specialities to suit all tastes – from the traditional "Gromperekichelchen" to more exotic flavours from far-flung destinations. Each market has its own distinctive character. Here's a brief guide to help you find your way around – they are all well worth a visit!

The cosmopolitan one: Place de la Constitution

In this great location overlooking the Adolphe bridge, more than 60 wooden chalets will be set up next to the Gëlle Fra monument. With a host of culinary specialities and crafts from all over the world, this market is the perfect place to find out about Christmas traditions in other countries. Top off your experience with a trip on the big wheel while sipping a cup of warming mulled wine and enjoying sensational views of the Pétrusse valley.

The traditional one: Place d'Armes

Come to the Place d'Armes for a typically Luxembourgish Christmas atmosphere, with stands offering local crafts, Christmas decorations, clothes and accessories. Sample traditional local cuisine ("Gromperekichelcher", "Grillwurscht" and "Bouneschlupp") to the strains of brass band music. Children will enjoy the merry-go-round and duck fishing.

The craft one: Place de Paris

The "Niklosmaart" – a market for St Nicholas Day and Advent – can be found near the station. A dozen wooden chalets are clustered around a huge glittering Christmas tree. As well as the hot drinks and food, you will find a selection of handicrafts and Christmas decorations, including candles and Advent crowns.

The foody one: Grund

This food lovers' market is stocked with a wealth of local and regional produce. The many delicacies on offer include blood sausage, snails, stuffed baked potatoes, foie gras, classy toasties, Bouneschlupp, Angus Steak sandwiches and grilled cheese specialities – not to mention a great selection of drinks.

The charity one: "Roude Pëtz"

The stalls of the "Roude Pëtz" market can be found in the Grand-Rue. This market offers local charities the opportunity to come and sell their products to raise money for a good cause. It's a great way to celebrate the real spirit of Christmas, which after all is about sharing and helping those in need.
