A new campaign promotes ethical clothing

The new campaign "Rethink your Clothes" is aimed at raising Luxembourg consumers' awareness of the challenges posed by the textile industry.

At the end of March 2018, the Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action Directorate launched the "Rethink your Clothes" campaign alongside NGOs Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg and Caritas Luxembourg. The partners call upon consumers to contribute directly to improving the living conditions of people working in the textile industry by adopting a more conscious purchasing behaviour.

Luxembourg City attracts expats

According to the 2018 Global liveability ranking, Luxembourg City is one of the top ten most attractive cities for European expats.

In March 2018, ECA International, a solution and information provider for international human resources professionals, released a new edition of its report on liveable cities for European expats across the globe: the 2018 Global liveability ranking. This year, Copenhagen, Bern and The Hague made it to the top of the global ranking. Luxembourg City is in 9th position worldwide.

Laurianne Bixhain, winner of the LEAP - The Luxembourg Encouragement for Artists Prize

On Thursday 22nd March of this year, the Rotondes awarded the LEAP prize - The Luxembourg Encouragement for Artists Prize to the young Luxembourgish Photographer.

After long deliberations, the five members of the jury reached a decision and Laurianne Bixhain won the prize, coupled with 12,500 euros from the Allen & Overy law firm.

Concrete measures for a cycling city

At the end of February, Patrick Goldschmidt, Deputy Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, reviewed the situation with the employees of traffic services and the Grand Ducal Police, as well as with members of the "Lëtzebuerger Vëlos‐Initiativ" (LVI - Luxembourg Bicycles initiative).

The agenda of the meeting with the Deputy Mayor in charge of the city's mobility included the development of a cycling bridge between the Cents area and the Weimershof and Kirchberg areas, as provided for in the coalition agreement of July 2017.

Innovative urban development projects were presented for the area

The Kirchberg area of the City of Luxembourg, one of the newest areas of the city, known primarily as an economic hub home to a number of European institutions, is in for a make-over. It will be carried out using a new approach based on circular economy principles. In other words, the partners want to distance themselves from the zoning principle and move towards urban mixing by creating diverse neighbourhoods with the aim of improving the quality of life.

The market is in good shape and demonstrates "qualitative growth", according to the Finance Minister.

The Luxembourg financial centre accounts for some 46,390 jobs – a figure welcomed by the Luxembourg Finance Minister, Pierre Gramegna. This represents a quarter of the country's gross value added and 11% of overall employment.

As a result of the accelerated internationalisation of the multilingual labour market, Luxembourg's National Employment Agency (ADEM) has just launched an English version of its Internet platform www.adem.lu, which was already available in French and German.

ParcLuxite: a new site for start-ups and innovation

A former explosive manufacturing site has reinvented itself to become a patron of start-ups playing an active role in eco-technologies.

Located in Kockelscheuer (commune of Roeser), the former mine and explosive manufacturing site of the "Poudrerie de Luxembourg" has been redeveloped so as to house innovative businesses, particularly in the field of eco-technologies. The Luxite One building, which was inaugurated last Friday, is now ready for its first tenants. Overall, Luxite One can house around 200 people on a surface of more than 4,000 m2, with 1,500 m2 of halls and 1,200 m2 of offices.

Women's rights are among the most respected in Luxembourg

According to the Women, Peace and Security Index published by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS), Luxembourg ranks 15th of the countries that are the most respectful towards women.

The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security was founded in 2011 by the former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Its index analysed the living and inclusion conditions - in social and economic terms - of women in 153 countries.

A Luxembourg passport is the best passport in the world to have

According to the Nomad Passport Index 2018, a Luxembourg passport is the best in the world, allowing visa-free travel to 177 countries.

The Nomad Capitalist study ranks the nationality of 199 different States by the number of States that can be visited without a visa being required, international taxation, dual nationality, personal freedom, and global perception of their nationals. With an overall score of 109.5 in 2018, the Luxembourg passport has moved up from 10th to 1st place in the ranking in the space of one year.

Users are happy with the new tram

A study has shown a high level of satisfaction with this new mode of transport

A large proportion of the population and visitors to the Grand Duchy find travelling by tram an attractive proposition. That's the result of a TNS Ilres opinion poll carried out in January and February 2018. 83% of the people asked expressed a positive opinion about the tram. Once it had come into service, 72% of the people asked were prepared to use public transport more, and 77% recommend the tram to families and friends.

DBRS confirms Luxembourg's "AAA" rating

On 9th March 2018, the DBRS rating agency confirmed the retention of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg's "AAA" rating, with a stable outlook.

In its analysis, the agency highlights Luxembourg's positive economic outlook. With a growth of 3.4%, the real GDP growth exceeded the average of the euro area and it is forecast to reach over 4% in 2018.

Less greenhouse gases in the Mullerthal

As part of the ZENAPA European project, CO2 emissions will be drastically reduced in Mullerthal Nature Reserve in favour of renewable energy sources throughout the 8-year duration of the project.

Mëllerdall (Mullerthal) Nature Reserve is in eastern Luxembourg, runs along the German border and has a total surface area of 256 km2. Twelve municipalities, in other words a population of 23,000 inhabitants, make up this region. At the end of February, this region, with its rocky landscapes, entered the implementation phase of the ZENAPA environmental project. The acronym stands for Zero Emission Nature Protection Areas.

This year, for the 24th edition of the International Vinalies Competition in Paris, Luxembourg wines were awarded 2 gold and 10 silver medals.

Each year, for 24 years, French Oenologists organise theprestigious International Vinalies Competition. Over 5 days, some 130 wine experts gather in Paris to taste a selection of over 3,000 wines from around the world. Once again, blind tasting demonstrated that Luxembourg wines and sparkling wines are of exceptional quality: The Grand Duchy's remarkable set was awarded 2 gold and 10 silver medals.

Luxembourg, the second richest region in Europe

According to the 2017 edition of the Eurostat regional yearbook, GDP per capita in Luxembourg is 257% of the European average.

In 2016, Eurostat recorded a GDP per capita, expressed in purchasing power standards, of €75,100 for Luxembourg. This represents 257% of the average of all regions in the 28 European Union Member States, which stands at €29,200. It places Luxembourg second in the ranking of EU regions, beaten only by Inner London – West, whose GDP per capita was 580% of the EU average.

Tourist numbers continue to grow

With more than three million overnight stays for all types of accommodation, tourism in 2017 continued its upward trend of recent years.

Research carried out by Luxembourg for Tourism (LfT) reveals that the tourism economy in Luxembourg is performing well. The figures for the period from January 1st to 31 December 2017 have improved in every respect compared with the same period in 2016.

emergency.lu expands across Europe

The satellite-based telecommunication system, "emergency.lu", which was developed by SES and the Luxembourg Government, made a name for itself when typhoon "Haiyan" hit the Philippines in 2013, an earthquake shook Nepal in 2015 as well as when hurricane "Matthew" struck Haiti. Its latest intervention dates back to 2017, when it helped Portuguese emergency services combat the devastating fires that ravaged the country all summer.
