Article 44 of the Constitution states that the grand ducal palace in Luxembourg and Berg Castle are reserved for the residence of the Grand Duke and his family. Indeed, the grand ducal palace has been serving as official residence for the sovereign and for the execution of his powers since 1890.
The grand ducal palace is mainly used for official functions and contains the offices of the grand ducal family. During the summer months, it is open to guided tours for the public.
Usually however, the grand ducal family lives in Berg Castle. The castle is the residence of the reigning Grand Duke and serves as main residence for his family.
HRH Grand Duke Jean has taken up residence at Fischbach Castle, and has been living there since summer 2002.
