Citizenship

Citizenship derives not only from possession of Luxembourg nationality but also from the exercise of civil and political rights.

Luxembourgish citizens have a mandatory role to play: the mandatory participation at the elections is one of the most important political rights. They are also entitled to stand as candidates in elections (eligibility entitlement).

Within the electoral system, non-Luxembourg nationals may participate, under certain conditions, in municipal and/or European elections.

Possession of a passport or identity card is evidence of Luxembourg nationality, both in Luxembourg and abroad.

The right to enter and stay in Luxembourg is governed by more or less flexible rules, depending on the foreigner’s country of origin. Once within Luxembourg territory, foreigners enjoy the same fundamental rights as Luxembourg citizens.
